PRP Microneedling and Regenerative Facials Q & A

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a type of regenerative medicine that uses your own growth factors, or platelets, to promote your body’s natural healing processes.

Platelets are small cells in your blood that assist in clotting and wound care. When your doctor injects PRP into your skin, it triggers a mild inflammatory reaction that attracts stem cells and growth factors to repair the damaged area. Over time, new collagen develops, which tightens and rejuvenates your skin.

How does PRP with microneedling work?

The team at IHS Medical Group performs PRP with microneedling as an outpatient procedure.

First, your doctor draws a small sample of blood and places it into a machine called a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins around, separating the different components of your blood.

After the centrifuge finishes spinning, your doctor mixes your PRP with a calcium chloride solution. Next, your doctor takes a hand-held tool called a dermaroller and makes a series of puncture wounds across the surface of your skin. After using the dermaroller, your doctor applies the PRP solution to your face.

As your skin absorbs the PRP, it becomes healthier and younger-looking. A PRP appointment with microneedling usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour. To achieve the best results, the team generally recommends a series of two to three treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart.

What are the benefits of PRP with microneedling?

PRP with microneedling presents a number of benefits. For one, it uses your own growth factors, virtually eliminating the risk of allergies. In addition, PRP with microneedling can:

  • Improve skin texture
  • Address fine lines
  • Minimize wrinkles
  • Increase facial volume
  • Reduce scars

In addition, PRP with microneedling significantly improves the appearance of skin under your eyes, neck, and décolletage.

PRP with microneedling also boasts a short recovery time, natural-looking results, and no need for general anesthesia.

What is a regenerative facial?

A regenerative facial is very similar to PRP with microneedling. The only difference is your doctor uses mesenchymal stem cells to promote new facial cell growth, instead of platelet-rich plasma.

Stem cells are the building blocks of life and assist in the repair and regeneration of damaged tissue. When your doctor applies mesenchymal stem cells to your face, it encourages the natural production of collagen and elastin, two proteins responsible for keeping your skin healthy and supple. More collagen and elastin also means healthier stem cells and longer-lasting aesthetic effects.
