Chiropractic Q & A

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a form of complementary care used to relieve musculoskeletal pain, improve range of motion, and restore the physical function of joints and muscles. Doctors of chiropractic, also called chiropractors, specialize in anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology and have extensive training in chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, and rehab.

In addition to chiropractic adjustments, IHS Medical Group offers massage therapy, physiotherapy, and rehab to help patients get out of pain and function at their best. Care may also integrate basic nutritional counseling – either for weight loss or improving your diet – and vitamin and mineral supplements that combat inflammation and reduce pain.

Chiropractic care doesn’t involve medications or surgery, so it’s a non-invasive alternative to other pain management approaches for patients who want to avoid medications or invasive procedures.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment, also called manual manipulation, is a hands-on technique used to restore mobility and function of a joint and reduce pain and inflammation in the area. Before a chiropractic adjustment, a team member begins by assessing your spine to determine if an adjustment is a safe option for you.

Then, the team member places on or both of their hands alongside your spine and applies a quick impulse of pressure. This impulse lasts only seconds and you may hear or feel a popping or cracking sensation. This happens when your joint is stretched and releases carbon dioxide gas from within the joint. You’ll likely notice an immediate sensation of relief or improved range of motion after a chiropractic adjustment.

Chiropractic adjustments are most commonly performed throughout the spine and pelvis, though adjustments can be performed on any joint. This can be helpful for shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle pain and stiffness.

Is chiropractic safe?

Yes. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic care is one of the safest non-invasive treatment options for low back pain, neck pain, and headaches. The only commonly reported side effect of chiropractic care is mild soreness at the treatment site for one to two days following care. This soreness is similar to muscle soreness after exercising.
